Georgetown Faculty Work to Improve Traffic Safety in Kenya

MBA Students Sponsor Desks for School Children in Africa

Brendan Callahan, a Georgetown MBA student and NGO cofounder, works to improve education in rural areas of Africa. He and his MBA classmates recently traveled to Tanzania, where they raised funds to sponsor the construction of 91 new desks for school children.

Georgetown Students Spend Summer Abroad in Tanzania

Seven GU students traveled to Tanzania as part of the African Studies Program and the Office of International Programs summer abroad program. Students learned Kiswahili, completed Development Studies coursework, traveled, and stayed with local families.
Georgetown Nursing Students Volunteer in Swaziland

Georgetown nursing student Leah Ruppe (NHS ’09) with medical staff in the TB ward of the RFM Hospital in Manzini, Swaziland. Students assisted with the clinical care of patients and engaged in scholarly projects at the hospital.

2009 Legacy of a Dream Award

President Barack Obama and Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia awarded the John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award to alumnus Dikembe Mutombo (I’91), President of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, for his work to improve health care in Africa.
Georgetown Honors Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS

In 2007 Georgetown University honored the Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS, represented here by the First Ladies of Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Zambia, with the John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award.
GAIN Gathers 450+ Georgetown Community Members

The GAIN launch indicated that Georgetown community interest in Africa is high. 150 participants attended this initial event, and the network has now grown to include more than 450 faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, and partners.
Kenya Immersion Experience

A group of Georgetown faculty and staff traveled to Kenya in June 2009 to learn about social justice issues in the country and serve Jesuit-affiliated NGOs. The Center for Social Justice and the Office of Mission and Ministry arranged the trip.
